He came to me in the form of a man. But I recognized him to be
the Badger. He spoke, thus: "I am your relative. Behold me. Do not construct
your dreams around your accomplishments. But construct your accomplishments
around your dreams!" Eagle Shield LAKOTA

Another year has come to a
close. For some it was a great year filled with magnificient adventures and
good fortune. For others it was a year of painful losses and challenging
lessons. Whatever kind of year it was for you personally, it has come to an end
and a new year has begun. It is a time of new beginnings, new resolutions and
commitments.
In reflecting upon the past it is important to remember
that yesterday is gone and it can not be relived except in your mind. All that
truly remains are the lessons we have learned which give us wisdom for today
and tomorrow. Whatever our past has been, it does not equal the future. No
matter what our current circumstances are, we can choose at any moment in time,
to change our destiny. That is the beautiful gift we have received from the
Creator.
In developing change for one's journey, we must first
understand that in most cases, change takes time.
First we must be
willing to let go of the past. This is many times, the most difficult piece of
the entire process of change. We must let go of that which does not serve to
evolve us to a higher level. We do that by releasing the victim and proclaiming
the victor. We must let go and allow the Great Mystery to work in our behalf
for our greater good.
Secondly, we must have a vision of what it is we
want to accomplish. This is not difficult for most of us. We can easily
visualize ourselves in a better place than we are currently, however, there is
a key that can stop our evolvement right here. We must believe in ourselves and
in our vision. We must believe that we deserve a better life and that we have
been given the gifts from Creator to implement that change. Without faith in
the Great Mystery and our abilities to succeed we have already failed.
The next important step is to plan our success. We must create a
bonified strategy to realize our vision. Very rarely does one ever just fall
into a fabulous new life. There are important, organized steps that must be
taken. There are many counselors and friends who can help us develop a
"written" plan for success.
Still, many of us excel at planning. Some
of us can spend our entire lives dreaming and planning, however, nothing will
happen until we commit ourselves whole-heartedly to the action required to
change our destiny. It is impossible to receive a (legal) college degree
without commiting to a course of study. Most of us can not lose weight without
changing our eating habits.
Very few of us are handed the
"good life" on a silver platter. We must work diligently for it each day. There
will be sacrifices to be made to insure our vision becomes reality but it is
those very challenges that provide us wisdom for the journey. We want to
encourage you to go for it! You can do it, for this one thing we know:
"that whatever we sow, that we shall also reap.." It is the law of
nature from which none of us are exempt. That which we put out will be returned
to us. This can be your year, if you choose
it.
In closing, remember to give thanks to the Creator for all things and
for life. Remember also to thank the Great Mystery for the Medicine people, the
healers, the teachers and the counselors who have given of their time and their
life's blood to assist us on our path.
...always know that you are
never alone and that the Great Mystery walks beside you and is with you on your
journey.
